Hey quick question. Keep seeing this referred to but thought if ask. Just doing a bit of lower unit work and the stainless washer for the lower unit shift shaft spline is dished. How bad before I should chuck it? I don't want that to give me issues. Thanks. John

hammer it flat and next time make sure the shoe fits the splines BEFORE tightening the bolts down

Out of curiosity what causes that? Did the prior owner just reef on something too tight and forget to align the shaft?

it is caused by just tightening the nuts to pull the drive together .the upper shoe is not correctly located on the splined shaft and is "forced" into position.
It can also cause the shift crank in the lower unit to become bent . that makes it difficult to shift.

Ok gotcha. Interesting. It isn't rocket science mating the shafts and splines yet every other post on here someone has issues with slipping shifting and misaligned shafts. Go figure!
