Strange behavior or maybe my lack of knowledge today on the water test of my 1973 Starcraft with Mercruiser 140. The trim worked fine out of water, up down, no trouble. My console has three switches, do the top 2 need to be need to be depressed to raise the out drive? That is the only combination that worked for up. Then, when in water, it wouldn't raise when the engine was not running. However after starting the engine, it worked? What should the expected behavior be?

Ayuh,.... I'd guess the trim limit switch is junk, so both buttons are necessary to raise the drive with the tilt switches,...

I agree, trim limit switch. It's a micro switch located on the motor. Lots of old motors have it bypassed. I didn't want to do that and found a new switch. Mercury says you have to buy the whole thing but you don't. A little soldering and you can replace it yourself.

I think the trim limit switch for that era is no longer available.
As George says you can bypass it or continue using both switches. Trailer up I think it's called.
