Any tips for replacing valve cover gaskets on a 5.7 merc? Should I use perfect seal on the new gasket and on the threads?

What style valve covers. Center bolt or perimeter bolt? If center bolt with ruber gasket id say dry but im sure it wouldnt hurt anything if you did.

center bolt's generally come with a rubber gasket - just install and be done. if its a perimeter bolt, and you did not buy a rubber gasket, head to the autoparts store and buy a set of rubber gaskets for your SBC and install.

Rubber gaskets are great. And don't over tighten them.

Is there a torque spec or a tightening sequence?

All I have ever done is snug then a quarter to half turn more. I like how Bondo says it just use your calibrated elbow.

Ok so I broke one of the bolts trying to remove. Then I drilled it out and tried to tap but the tap broke. Had a mechanic Truro tap after the broken tap was removed and it broke again. What do yall think about three bolts and rtv on both sides of the gasket?
