Mercruiser 165HP 2002 Bravo 3 leg lost power and making thumping noise plus smoking

Hi guys. i have a 2002 Mercruiser which is a VM diesel apparantly. Only had it a short time and it was running sweet but lost power and first turn over aftr getting back to port it is smoking badly at idle (no smoke when we were coming back in that I noticed)
also noticed a different noise in the engine like a thumping, knocking noise I made a video so interested in your feedback comments

Looks like you have one of those Italian diesels, haven't worked on one of those yet. For it to just start doing what its doing and no previous problems I'm thinking fuel. Can you trust your fuel supplier? Diesel is real susceptible to water and algae growth. I would start with checking the contents of your fuel filters.
