Assuming that you're running something like an Alpha, you don't remove the prop shaft you remove the bearing carrier.

It would be good to know specifically what you are working on, as that will help with answers. Although the bearing carrier as stated is probably what you will be removing to replace the oil seal.

'76 MC-1 Mercruiser lower unit prop shaft seal. Pressure test indicates compromised seal. Hate to pull the bearing carrier just to change the shaft seal. But I may have to.

Removed prop shaft and replaced the seals. Pressure test is A-OK. Gears looked good. Dogs have a little wear but look pretty good. Ready for the season. Grandson coming for first boat ride--woo hoo.
