If I wanted to swap my 1984 470 to a 165 inline six, what would I be able to use from my 470 set, would the outdrive be interchangeable I know the 470 had the alpha1 the 165 has the older Rdrive, will the transom set up work

Actually, my 470 uses the MC-I with a 1.84 gear ratio. Offhand, why do you want to switch over from the 470?

Why not just go to a 4.3l? They are easier to find and cheaper. Parts are more common also. You will need to do motor mounts either way. The drive ration will be the same for all of them.

Can't be done... (Without a LOT of pain)....

The in-line 6 was discontinued when the updated drives were introduced (1982). What that means for you is no flywheel housing was made for the 165 to sit in front of an Alpha One drive (the rear mounts are spaced differently)... Also the coupler for the 165 needs a shorter drive yoke... The ratio used for the 165 was 1.65:1, the ratio used for the 470 was 1.84:!... No biggy on the ratio... But it is a difference...

yes sounds a huge pain, thankyou for the info I think it would be best to strike the I6 from the list, even if it was super cheap

It is almost always easier to deal with your 470 issues (head gasket, cam seals or alternator) than making the swap. Anything you get "cheap" likely would have its own problems. In spite of what "some" say, a well maintained 470 is every bit as reliable as any of the "good" engines, and one heck of a lot easier to winterize!

I'm really not anti 470, the one I have needs some money spent on it. Starter, manifold, cam or speedy sleeves. I just feel like if I'm going to spend that kind of money I'd rather spend it on something I'm more comfortable with
