I have a 1984 3.0l and it kind of does the same thing. I just had the shift cable replaced and bought a new teleflex crontrol. It now hits both gears, but it seems to need to go past the indent to reach it. I am thinking the control cable needs to be replaced.

Check the slop on your shift cable, and control cable to make sure they are within specs.
