Thanks for the speedy replay. My bolts are 5/16. I used the RTV that came with the Fel-Pro intake gasket set and all surfaces were spotless, bolts cleaned and oiled and head threads chased with a tap. Just years of twisting bolts makes me feel that I may be going too far for 10 more lb.ft.

No I didn't. They weren't going into the water jacket. They go into the valley. Should I have? The manual did not say to. I did all the head bolts though.

I use ARP torque lube but it is basically antisieze. The Caterpillar manuals call for special CAT torque lube but the old ones call for straight antisieze. Use to use only motor oil years ago but found later antisieze works best for true torque

I think the manual is not exactly dead on for the Vortec. Should I look somewhere besides # 25 for motor #OM060235?

I use Marvel Mystery Oil for all light oil applications. I'm thinking stop where I'm at and continue reassembly.

Yep ,it is .312 -18 x 1.75 MERCRUISER - (4.3L H.P. (1998M ))
Serial No: 0M060235 Model No: 4211015N1 Catalog No: 809969 98
intake torque for the GEN + is listed as 11 Ft/Lbs and the reg V6 intake listed as 35 Ft/lbs.

hey BT, are you saying that I need to take my intake down to 35lb.ft.? Man, it sure seems tight for 5/16 bolts. I know y'all are probably tired of this project. It has taken way too long. Family priorities, bad weather and other obligations have caused this project to drag out. I'm determined to have her under way for boating season. I appreciate the help. You guys have really saved me. Thanks

Well it damn sure does. I need to note to follow the chart and not the how to parts of the manual. What are the chances I can loosen and retorque the bolts with out installing another gasket set? I don't want the engine to warm and expand and break my heads or intake.

The engine hasn't been started so this is not an issue.

I can't work on it today, but I went out and loosened the bolts this morning. I'll let it sit today and retorque tonight weather permitting. Hopefully the gasket will decompress ok.

36 hours or so later, I went out and uncovered it long enough to go back down to 132 lb.in. Don't really trust the lb.ft. wrench I have that low. Worked it down with 5 steps. Time will tell. Now to replace the next to impossible to get to bilge pump float switch and a few other things that are a little easier to get to with the exhaust manifolds off. Then to mount my new OEM manifolds and risers and tune this old girl up! Just aren't enough hours in the day.

Yep, definitely says 35 in the text... (Paragraph 4, page 25, section 3A, manual #25).. That's one to watch.. Well spotted Cliff.

Thanks Chris, but BT gets the credit for finding the right torque. I just chickened out on taking those little bolts that far.

Oh, I found the right torque in the manual easily enough (11 ft-lb, in the torque spec sheet at the beginning of the mechanical section), but couldn't understand why you were trying to take them to 35. Wasn't until I looked in the text on R & Ring the manifold that I saw the 35....

Re: 2001 4.3 intake bolt torque. 35lb.ft. Really??

Yep, that's where I found it. When you're following the R & R and the number is right there, why would you look elsewhere. BYA I'll check that chart on everything else.
