I have an 89 searay with a 3.0 in it. The tach is pegged around 5500rpm. Never moves. I found the gray wire was connected on the + side of the ignition coil from a previous owner. I moved it to the negative side and tach still doesn't work. Would it being connected wrong cause the tach to burn up and need replaced? How can I make sure it's the tach before I just start replacing parts?

If the tach does not move and it doesn't matter if the engine is running or not, also doesn't move if the gray wire is disconnected, the tach is toast

Replace tachometer and everything is working now. Thanks again.
