I came across this site searching for instrument panel wiring diagram. I found an old post with some expired links. We have a manual for this engine but the diagram shows 10 wires and our engine has 9 on the instrumental panel. Our serial number is 3852802. If anyone has the diagram for this could you post the link please. We are trying to install a new ignition switch for the project boat we purchased had no switch.

Not a 7.5L .... What does that mean?
Almost every page is showing 9 wires, only ones that don't are EFI models have 10 wires. If it is a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder they all have 9 wires, what's missing?

Update - We thank you, AllDodge for the link to the diagrams, we downloaded and printed them and compared to the wires we have unfortunately the diagrams included in the file do not fully correspond to what we have. We have 2 purple wires, brown, white, grey, blue, a thick orange, thick red and thick black wired coming from engine to instrument panel. The instrument panel also differs from the one on the diagram in that it lists a oil pressure gauge whereas our does not have one. From left to right we have water temp, tach, volts, hours, mph, fuel. And from red its only 8.5 volts not 12 If anyone has a more specific diagram it would be very helpful and appreciated.

What colors are your wires ? WHat gauge are the wires ? Mercury has bee using the marine standard for wire color/hook up forever. To locate what hooks to what go back to the engine and find, oh say, the lt. blue wire (most likely hooked to the oil pressure sender) unhook it and use an ohm meter on each end to verify that you have the correct wire...this wire will go to the oil pressure gauge.
AllDodge do you think the tenth wire is the one that tees off and goes to the tilt/trim switch and never makes it to the inst. panel ?

It's possible, because nothing seams to be adding up. Just need to wait and see what other info comes to help clarify

Hello thank you we are going to install the ignition key/switch into the control panel. We found wire cluster that is to be connected, neatly bundled wth a zap-strap. We searching all over everywhere for a diagram that is specific to our boat or some way to find out how to properly connect circuits so we dont have to do "anyhow" like we stealing it. The switch came with a diagram explaining where its 6 connections are to be used for. Problem is the bundle of wires in our hands is such a mystery. We really appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Ayuh,....If yer talkin' 'bout the whip that comes from the cannon plug on the motor, look in this manual for the wirin' diagrams,...

It covers the Merc's of yer vintage,...

'n if yer only gettin' 8.5v on the big red wire, ya got a problem Up-stream,...
Start at the battery, 'n work forward,...
