Does this mean my alternator is shot or do I have much larger problems?

Well, it depends on what led up to this, and that's assuming the battery was not hooked up backwards, even for a few seconds.

What happened leading up to this?

Hello Robert, and :welcome: to iBoats....

That would indicate one of the diodes is shorted. Best option is to take the alternator to a repair shop. It's far better to have your old one fixed than buy a cheap, nasty Chinese import....

As already asked, what is the lead up to this?

Chris......
