I know there are no dumb questions, just dumb people, right? I think I might be one of those. In changing the alternator belt on my 72 merc 120 (sn 3331071) I moved the top pulley slightly; does this matter? Was I suppose to mark it or something. Somehow I thought maybe the valves might not be aligned because I moved the pulley slighty. On the other hand it doesn't seem right, because that belt must be able to slip. Thanks.

Nothing to worry about. That belt just drives the water pump and alternator.

On the longest run between pulleys, just push the belt with about 10lb of pressure, belt should move about 1/2"
