howling in neutral

Hello, I have a merc 170 and it started howling after I started it up a few times this summer.it does it in neutral and in gear.was fine in spring.i wondered if it was gimbal but that would only be when in gear wouldnt it? Boat was fine this spring.i was taking a video of it running right when it started making noise so I can post that if I need to.thanks for any help

It would happen in neutral or in gear as the shaft in the gimbal bearing is always turning when the engine is turning.......

So more than likely gimbal bearing considering my boots have rips in them.just replaced the bearing last spring and knew I should have done those boots.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Yes, ya should replaced All the rubber parts, 'n the lower shift cable too,....

if the rubber parts are Rotten, the cable is over-due as well,...
