I have a 1983 Mercruiser 305/5L MCM228 V8 engine (Serial#62785627) with a cracked block. Can I get a long block from a auto junkyard and swap over the engine components from the cracked block?

Yes......Keep it the same vintage (Yr)..... Swap over the Alt, dist, starter, carb as they are all spark contained.

Put brass freeze plugs in also.

P.S. go with a 350 instead of the 305 if posible.

I agree. Put a 350 back in your boat. You need a 1980 to 1985 vintage which will have the two piece rear seal and will work with your flywheel and starter, and bolt right back in to your transom plate and motor mounts. All the peripherals fit also. I would not buy a junk yard block. Too many unknowns for me. Too much work to put it all together and find out it has a problem, or is worn out etc. Also, you need a truck engine anyway, because the cams are closer to what a boat uses do to torque requirements. You can get a rebuilt marine 350 engine without valve covers, oil pan and timing cover (the "tin") for around $1500.

How can I tell a truck 350 from a car 350?

Well if your getting it from a junkyard they might know or you can write down (or photograph) the block number and cross reference. It on charts available on the net. Some engines were only used in trucks others car or trucks. You cant look up whether it was beat or how many miles or what condition the water pump is in etc
