I am going to change my ignition module or sensor this week after troubleshooting my very rough running 97 merc 5.7l carb alpha 1. I have read that if you change your ignition module you also need to do the timing on the engine as well. Need confirmation. Thanks in advance!

Re: time motor after ignition module / sensor change?

Generally a MODULE change should not affect the timing. A sensor (inside the distributor) change would...

Either way, I check the timing whenever I change any ignition parts.... Just a good practice.... (and if you're changing the module, check the advance curve too.... make sure it's in spec for THAT engine. More than once the wrong module has been fitted to an engine.)
