my boat has issues

I have a 1980 140 mercruiser. the motor ran several times, then just quit. I checked the points, cleaned them and re gaped them. when I turn the motor over, I get two maybe three sparks on the points then nothing. I replaced the coil, but is doing the same thing. any ideas???

Coil $45. Tune Up Kit w/Points that should be replaced annually $20. Easy economics.

Check the wire between the coil and distributor, ensure not bad. Older engines are pretty easy, Spark, fuel and air to make it run. Somewhere is a drop off in spark. I would use a spark detector tool to ckeck to see if coil if working altogether. It maybe that you got a bad coil. Did you change the wires?
