No reverse throttle Alpha One

My 1987 4.3l with 1987 Alpha One shifts easily and has full throttle in forward. When I shift into reverse it does lock in but there is no throttle available. On muffs it stalls when I get it all the way in reverse, but runs fine on forward. In the water it only stalls occasionally when I go to reverse. Do I need to do a full shift cable adjustment or is there an easier way to just get some throttle in reverse? The remote control handle is straight up in neutral.

sounds like a bad throttle cable or adjustment.

more likely a corroded shift cable.

The lower shift cable is only a month old. How can I tell if it is the cable from the remote is bad?
