1992 4.3v6 mercruiser

Hello, I'm new to boating recently got a 1992 19ft mariah with a 4.3 v6 mercruiser with a edelbrock performer intake and a carter 4 barrel. After some tune ups I got the motor to start and now finally to idle, but when I put it into gear the engine dies forward or reverse On muffs. Sometimes if I ease the throttle I can get it past the point when it would stall but the prop does not turn. Any advice to what could be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Does it idle smooth or rough? Have you check your fuel supply with regard to fuel pressure and flow. Have the fuel filter been replaced? Have you checked compression?

could also be your shift switch. if it stays switched for to long it will kill the motor.
