1978 Bayliner Mutiny, 120 Mercruiser, won't go in reverse

I have an older Bayliner with a 120 Mercruiser that won't go into reverse. With or without the engine running it makes the same bumping sound. There is no grinding or anything like that, just a solid bump. The control moves a few inches at best in reverse then it there is a suddon stop when I hear the bump. Forward isn't a problem, it goes into forward just fine, just no reverse. I hope someone has an idea because I am stuck!

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Pull the outdrive, inspect the cable, 'n linkage, 'n see if the drive will shift, manually,...
