I gualled the No. 1 piston pretty bad and have my engine out. I am going to take it a machine shop for second opinion if it needs boring out or can hone out cylinder marks.

But the back side of the bearings are pretty fretted. Its hard to tell if they flaked or its just fretted to a bruise.

What are your opinions of these marks.

A larger pic of the bearing would be better.
As long as the lock tab is still there (I can't see in the pic), that bearing looks fine for normal wear.
Replace them since you have them out. Don't reuse old bearing, that's just never a good idea.

They did not turn. They look ok some marks maybe heavy for number of hours on engine. Just seemed fretted and bruised on back side of bearing. This is my first time doing this all by myself and just questioned the appearance. The main bearings don't look fretted but the cast iron is little rougher finish and they have more surface area plus load is distributed to 2 sides.

I will try to upload bigger pictures. I clipped those from my camera picture but full size picture is too big of file size.

No. 3 rod and cap with bearing out.

How about these pictures. Is this amount of fretting normal? Is that an ok description of the marks. What would you call it?

This is just staining, and is normal.

The side that makes contact with the crank side is the important side.
