1983 898 305 mercruiser help

i have a 1983 898 305 mercruiser on trailer it revs up and runs good dont mater if its in gear but in water give it full throtlle wont go no faster then 5 10 miles an hour it dont back fire or miss i tryed turning the distribter just makes it worse i was thinking it was not geting the right amount of fuel so when runing i sprayed starting fluid in the carb that just boged it down here is a list of things i replaced orderd a electronic ignition conversion kit for it new plugs wires cap rotor intake gasket and carburetor still wont go

Just a thought.......spun prop hub.

Does the prop lock in forward and rev out of the water?

New hub with new prop? What size and pitch?

Yes it does. I thought that was it but I tried to turn it over by hand and couldn't spin it.

Ayuh,.... Does it Rev up, or just Bog out when ya do that,..??

if its got mechanical spark advance check make sure its actually advancing the timing when you rev it out of gear does it sound throaty thats stuck advance weighs as an adjunct to what Bond-o asked when your doing 5 10 mph on the water what revs are you making does it sound like its revving hard or are the revs down to could be a spun coupler

it revs to like 2000 rpms and that is it. it dont bog out it just holds that rpm

Ayuh,.... Sounds like a B-o-o-o-o-o-o-g to me,... Verify the Ignition is in tune, 'n advancin'...

You've been checking the timing with a timing light, right?
