In reference to this old topic, http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...ing-impeller-in-lower-unit-alpha-1-gen-1-1990

I have this problem. I lost the washer for the shift shaft though and am not sure what size to get. When I put it together I lock it in forward gear but keep the throttle in neutral. This may be wrong. When i do this though I'd i do it without a washer the throttle moves freely but will not go into gear. When I use a washer the throttle gets jammed up. Do I just retry with a washer with the throttle in forward? Just asking cuz I'm sick of taking it apart. And can't find a proper diagram of what size washer and how it sits on the shaft. method

OK you have a couple of problems here, first being you should start your own thread, (OK YOU DID THAT) but I'll try to sort through it. #52 here: https://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...HAFT)+-+MR . First off you need to have to have the control in forward to put it together properly. If what you say about it jamming is correct, i don't think you have it locked in forward, I think you have it locked in reverse. So drop the gear housing down, turn the splined lower shift shaft CLOCKWISE as far as it will go. Rotate the prop COUNTERCLOCKWISE until the prop locks, you are now in forward, bungee it to hold it in locked in. Look underneath to make sure the bottom coupler of the upper shift shaft is pointing straight ahead. You can take a piece of tape and tape the intermediate shift shaft in the coupler so it will not move around. Put it back together, if you need to rotate the prop to get the driveshaft splines lined up, turn counterclockwise only. You should be good to go. I just copied this off the other thread.

Hope this is some of the info you were looking for Priebe85 Mainly due to I was going off of the info inside the archived topic you brought up but didn't mention what year or model drive you have yourself.;)

You need to lock the lower in forward. You can use a bungy to hold the prop locked. Then have the shift shaft straight forward when you put them together. I know from experience that the control will not work when you don't do it right.
