I thought I read somewhere one should only ever get the OEM shift cable for the mercruiser alpha 1 drives. I can't find that post though. Is there some reason this is the case or will the Sierra or Mallory shift cable work just as well?

iboats.com only sells the Mallory or Sierra it seems.

The OEM has a different liner inside the cable. Lasts longer, works better, and is actually cheaper....

Do any of those exist online?

Many Mercury dealers do take orders and ship throughout the country.

Here's a link from the Merc. site where you can put in your local information and find one.
(The link may default to here locally in SoCal but you can override that).

Thanks!

It's been really frustrating to find any information on Mercruisers for some reason. The parts are readily available, but the information available for OMC makes a lot more sense and is much easier to find.

When you read these posts and see where the experts are requesting engine/drive serial numbers it is because of so many changes which can be confusing.

Here are some links if you don't already have some where you can do parts lookups that may help.
There are some good diagrams that show various component systems that may help.

Thanks! Those links let me find exactly what I needed. I have an OEM shift cable kit PN 865436A02 on its way for my 898 with a Chevy 305 that has been upgraded to the install from aft cable.
