Is this normal? Pulled the drive for the first time and see a lot of excess grease around the gimble bearing.

Yes, its normal. It's because you pump grease into the zerk and you cant see it squish out with the drive mounted. From now on, check it by hand first... and if it feels good and smooth...just give it a few shots and rotate it by hand. Just wipe up the the excess with a rag... no issues.

better to much lub than not enough

that's a pic of my '75 mc-1 coupler after i removed the drive (early oct. this year). i lubed it maybe 2-4 times over the summer. 5-10 pumps on the grease gun. when ya introduce the new grease. it comes out where the hole is coming from the zerk. this only lubs that particular point. the opposite side of the brg. sees no new grease till the brg. is rotated.
i also just wipe off the mess prior to storage. along with adding new grease and manually rotating the brg. which introduces new grease to the whole brg. since i manually rotate it. wipe off the excess....
