Need info please

We recently purchased a 1980 Carver 25 and have a question about the engine interupt. When we first got the boat the engine would stop dead when changing to reverse, we did some adjustment and now the engine continues to run in reverse but stops when changing to neutral. is there any special way of adjusting the cam that operates the interupt (see pic). Also what is the arrangement at the other end of the gear shift mechanism, is it shift assist ? ( see pic )

That is a typical indication of needing a new lower shift cable, not an adjustment.

Ayuh,.... Not so much stretched, but the inner cable wears a groove in the outer housing, causin' too much slop, 'n not enough travel...

Btw,... yer 1st picture is the reverse lock,.... It keeps the drive from jumpin' up, in reverse...
