Can anyone tell me what model of alternator I have for my Merc 165?
From what I can tell it looks like a 10SI alternator with anti spark shields in the vent holes..

Looking at it it only had one wire hooked up to the big post on the rear and a ground wire to the housing..

Would this one here work?
3 Wire repair

or does it sound like it's a 1 wire ALT?

I also need a capacitor as the wire broke off on the rectifier and the screw is siezed. This is what I'm lookin at now.

TIA!

You would be better off taking your existing alternator to a shop and have them rebuild it. If you feel ambitious, you can buy a rebuild kit for around $25 from here.

I rebuilt my one wire alt. last summer and it works great. it was so easy that I got ahold of another bad marine alt (same as mine) and rebuilt it as a spare.

Yeah, they aren't hard.. I got it all apart and blasted out the housings the other day and painted it last night... Little different color than factory... I had some left over paint from painting my old Ford 9N tractor. So the housing is gonna be Smoke Gray and the fan is black.
It is lookin nice! I just have to figure out what to do with the little sheild that goes over the rear housing with the spark screen...

I ordered my new one wire kit..... Should be here soon....

You gotta put that shield back on that is what makes it "explosion proof".
