Mercury 4000 Gen II 8M0011213 Panel Mount Throttle / Shift Control

Hello Guys,
I have this throtle shifter Mercury 4000 Gen II 8M0011213 Panel Mount Throttle / Shift Control In order to lube up and retighten the shifter I had to take it apart. There is a kind of button that you can push in but only I think when it's in forward the only reason I know is b/c without doing so I wouldn't be able to take the shifter apart. Can someone explaing the purpose/function of that round push button? Is it just there as a safety measure thus the shifter doesn't fall apart or there is something more to it.

Sounds like you are referring to the throttle only button at the pivot of the control handle.
When in neutral you push it in, and push the lever forward for throttle only, the drive remains in neutral.
When you pull the lever back to neutral, the button pops back out and when you move the lever forward the drive shift into forward gear, at the first detent, then the throttle moves after that.

Thank you for your swift reply.
Let me get this straight, I would only use this to assist start of my engine while drive would stay in neutral. How does that help with starting engine? Sprays more gas?? I want to make sure that I understand this concept

The controls are used on carbed engines as well as MPI engines like you have. Yes, the throttle only position is used a lot with carbed engines to prime the engine with extra gas and give the engine some rpm while warming up.
