Your swim ladder is interesting. I have to get the kids to stand on the top of the engine to get on my swim platform.
Was thinking on adding some kind of ladder

Never seen one mounted like the one you have. Cool....

Engine sounds good

Re: My Merc 470 Lives Again

Thanks so far.
I had no end of trouble with this boat, it was sold as ready for the water but needed the following -

Ex. Mani and Riser
4 inch heat exchanger
Starter Motor
Solenoid
Points
Impeller / pump kit
Rams rebuilding
Carb rebuild
re wire
Alternator mount reweld
gauges renewed
audible alarm system
senders for nearly everything

still needs a trim switch and a few other bits and bobs but she is good to go in the water now. The engine runs so so sweetly now I was so happy to run her up.

She stayed below 175F and oil pressure on idle wartmed up was 40-60 psi.

The ladder came with the boat, I think its the original Draco design.

Thanks again

Ron.

Re: My Merc 470 Lives Again

Sounds lust like mine, congratulations!:D

Thanks Terry, without your help and encouragement I would not have done this.

One question while you are here, the idle screw stops shy of the idle cam when coming off throttle and it seems to stick at 2000rpm and needs pushing by hand to close the gap between the screw and cam. Is this a setup issue or could it be something else ?

Thanks

Ron.

Don't know, not much of a carburetor guy. Just sounds like the linkage is binding a little, just have to find out where. Nice looking boat. BTW, is that a solar charger?

Hi Terry,

No problem, I think there is suppored to be a return spring on the idle cam ? if so that might be the problem as mine does not have one.,

Yes its a 40 watter to keep the bat topped up as I have no drain hole and use an auto bilge pump to keep here dry.

Just wondering if she will see water this season, 6 C here today :(

Re: My Merc 470 Lives Again

I am thinking that there is no "return spring" but it might be the coil spring in the choke that returns the throttle stop to the idle screw stop. Check by removing the flame arrestor and moving the choke butterfly to see if that returns it to idle, if it does, then you may need to adjust the choke. Pure speculation here on my part, maybe one of the carb guys will chime in here.

I think you might be right. I hardly added any coil tension to the choke coil at all. Will give it a few winds tomorrow - it makes sense.

I have to mention the water pump pulley looks a bit out of wack. As for the water flow, it really doesn't look like a lot of water coming out of the bypass ports but then I'm not very familiar with 470s idle output. Is the supply hose drawing water from the big puddle?

Re: My Merc 470 Lives Again

Hey Ron

The only 470 I have seen running on land, did pour a lot more water out of the bypass holes in the transom, as far as I remember. But if it keeps a steady temperature, everything may be ok anyway.

The engine sounds swell.

I also have a Draco 1800 Suntop, later model with blue/white upholstery, bought it in 1996, don't think I will ever sell it.

Re: My Merc 470 Lives Again

Thanks all.

Fixed the throttle cable, returns to idle just fine now.

Got to true the crank pulley for sure.

Also engine needs a good flush as oil was still contaminated but not as much emulsification this time. Using sump plug to drain I only managed to remove half of the oil I put in originally, is that normal ?
