I purchased a boat with mercruiser 3.0. Pertronix ignition installed by previous owner. Need to know if black sleeve under rotor has to be installed in a certain position

9. Install the magnet sleeve over distributor shaft and onto the point cam.
Rotate sleeve until a slight locating position is felt before applying
pressure. With sleeve lined up on point cam, press down firmly insuring
the sleeve is fully seated

There are four flats inside. Does position matter for timing or does it signal four times per 360 degree rotation (3.0 mercruiser)? Just want to make sure it is installed properly

It trips the sensor 4 times per revolution.

It does not matter, as long as it slips on over the cam. Are you having trouble?

Re: Pertronix assembly

Just curious. Rebuilding carb and while waiting for parts was checking other stuff and wanted to see if points were ok. Looks like I don't need to worry about them after all. Thanks for the info
