1979 sea ray mercruiser 225 hp overheating and wont engage into gear

New to boating...... Trying to get a grasp on the problem and trouble shoot.
Engine started overheating on the lake, so we turned it off for awhile. When we were headed back to the
Marina the boat just sort of popped out of gear and stopped. It fired right back up but would not go into gear.
We had to get towed back. Got her home and hubby adjusted the gear cable. Got her back out to the lake,, never made
It off the launch ramp. Still will not go into gear. And temp shot right up again......can someone please advise me of
What the problem might be? Thank you

Once it cools down, start the engine and look behind the engine at the shaft going to the outdrive. Is it turning at the same speed as the engine?
