Make a shift cable tool?

I have a Mercruiser Bravo 2 outdrive with a mercruiser 5.7. I am changing out the shift cable at the same time I do the bellows. Looking at pics of the cable core location tool that goes across the bellhousing, it looks like it is only a piece of plate steel or aluminum with a slot. Is this as simple as it is, and does anyone have the thickness of the plate? It looks like a pretty easy tool to make and would save me a week of shipping time and cost to purchase one.
Thank you

Re: Make a shift cable tool?

I'll move this over to the Mercruiser forum. The OMC forum is probably not the best place for your questions.

I would guess the tool isn't much over 3/16" thick, that would be close enough for what it does.
