'79 Merc 470 with over heating issues. No temp gauge just an idiot light that pretty much is always lit. I want to install a temp gauge and I'm ignorant on what I need.
Mechanical or electric gauge?
Sending unit?
Location of install for said sending unit?

I'm no electrical genious but my BIL has some skills, so if anyone could walk me through what I need and a general idea of installation I'd be very greatful. Pics or links would probably save the day.

Like I mentioned, it gets hot but what is that light telling me, I need a gauge to see the real condition.

#17 here: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...+MANIFOLD+ASSEMBLY+AND+EXHAUST+ELBOW+ASSEMBLY Any gauge sender set will probably work. IMHO electrical would be best. You can also get a radiator cap thermometer to double check your readings. For your overheating, if the impeller is 2 years old change it. Would not be a bad idea to do the whole thing housing and impeller. Good luck.
