OK I have a mid 70 mercruiser 140 that I think the alternator has giving the ghost up. I just used the pontoon last weekend and noticed at first start my volt gauge would read battery voltage till i reved it bast 1300 rpms then it would jump up to 14.0v. Tonight I was finishing up on my fuel system hooked the muffs up and noticed the alt. not charging at all. This is a single wire alternator with just a red(bat) wire going to it.

I'm almost positive the alt. finally gave out but I just want to make sure before I go and buy a MARINE alt.

Thanks
Mike

Do you have a Volt-Meter ? any cheapie one would do the trick. Put the black probe on a good ground/mass, the other on the positive connector on the alternator.. Put the meter on DC and start 'er up. Make sure it's not your gauge acting up first.

If all else fails, take it to any auto parts store and have them check it for you. Let us know.
