2004 Merc 5.0L EFI in a Trophy 2359 (Bravo 3 outdrive)

I recently turned on my bilge pump and had a nasty sheen of oil appear next to my boat. After investigating the bilge, there is visible oil. My bilge is almost always dry, so I have no idea how long this problem had been going on. After about 10-15 hours driving, the engine was about a half quart low.

I'm certain there are many possible causes here, but I'm no expert, so I'm looking for some help. Where do I start? What are the most likely possibilities? What do I need to know about this before I start digging in?

Thanks.

Re: Oil in the bilge

The possibilities are . . .

Motor oil from a pin hole in the oil pan, or maybe loose oil filter.

If you have the remote oil filter, then check the hoses that lead to/from it and the oil cooler.

Could be Gear lube from the outdrive reservoir

There are a few more, but those would be good to start with

Re: Oil in the bilge

Start by gently touching the sump with your hand.... When you find oil, start backtracking it. Can't offer much more help than that....
