How much longer is the L6 than the L4? I have an opportunity to buy a 165 with the drive for $450. Is it Worth it even if it needs rebuilding? Second, does anyone have a dimension for transom to front mount distance so I can see if it will fit? It's quite a drive just to get the dimensions then get home and forget what the length was (CRS).
Also is there much difference in compression from the aftermarket head gaskets from sierra versus the oem stainless gasket?

I am currently rebuilding an old boat with an I6 mercruiser. Distance from the transom to the motor mount is 36". Width of engine box is 24". Hope this helps.

If the motor and drive work its a screaming bargain

New drive from mercruiser $5500 or so from SEI almost $3800 or so and I've seen pro rebuilt engines in the $3000 range

Wow i didn't know they used bravo 3 drives on a merc 165 or 140 :)
actually alpha one prices are about half that amount and a little 4 or 6 banger is very inexpensive to rebuild.

???? Are you sure?? I'd have said about 10"... Based on the fact that in-line 6 is just an in-line 4 with 2 more cylinders (I know that sounds obvious, but bear with me... :D) The piston diameter is 3.875", with a small gap, maybe 0.5" between them... So, 2 times piston, plus 2 times gap... 8.75".. Add some 'fudge factor', call it 10"

What say you?

Chris.... :D :D

That's about what I was thinking. Of course Sangster gave me his dimension so I'm off to measure my well.

According to Sangster21's picture, if his tape is on the transom, then I have 3 options. My front pad is 36" and it looks like I need 38 for the front motor mount.
Options:
1. If the chainsaw will start I can make her fit.
2. Put in my older I drive transom plate on the inside which looks like it will set the engine back 2 inches.
3. Buy it anyways then watch Craigslist for a free boat it will fit into.

Yup, the tape was on the transom, parallel to hull at engine bed height.
