how do I replace the cable going into the lower unit that engages my propeller?

I have a 1976 mercruiser 140 hp the cable runs from the top behind the engine on top of some sort of shift mechanism into the propeller side of the engine...........well my cable is not moving in or out its stuck and I dont have the slitest idea how to change it..............any suggestions or manuals or walk throughs? Thanks all in advance for your help

how long have you had this boat, and how old is the cable, and when was the last time you pulled the outdrive off?

I just purchased it and have never had the outdrive off...........the guy I bought it from (on craigslist) claims he had it out on memorial day seriously doubtful!

Being the boat is a '76 you may have the old style shift cable still. They have been change to a newer style that threads into the bellhousing from the aft end, instead of the front end of the bellhousing.

If your drive is original, it would be a MC-1
