5.0 mer i/o that cuts out

I have a 1996 mercruiser 5.0 mpi. The engines runs fine until I put put it into neutral. It then cuts out and turns off. It will then take quite a while to restart, while I shove it into gear quickly. It sounds like its starving for gas when I crank it over. Any suggestions.

Welcome to iBoats . . . this threads should be in the Mercruiser forum (not the Mercury outboard Forum) Hopefully, the moderators will move it at some point.

The issue sounds like it could be a problem with the shift controls . . . there is some sort of 'shift interrupt' thingy that prevents shifting above idling speeds, etc. My thinking is that as you futz with the controls while trying to re-start it then relieves itself of the interrupt mode and off you go.

Sorry for the technical terms of 'thingy' and 'futz'

'Shift interrupt switch' is the 'thingy'... (And they're only on Alpha engines, so Ted has never seen one... )
