shift problems

HELP went out last weekend boat ran and shifted just fine all day until we decided to head back to the marina. It would not shift into either forward or reverse. I tried to adjust the shift cable by moving the barrel nut with no results. As a preface I had to adjust the cable when I first put the boat in the day before. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

SO with all those possible causes.... I would disconnect the lower shift cable at the bracket on the engine and push and pull the cable end in or out, see if the drive goes thru the motions, move to the next step.

push in for forward and out for reverse.
