Cruising in about 20' or more of water (lake) at about 20 - 25 mph when we felt the motor "slip". It was then we noticed the tach was stuck at about 1.5 rpms. Not sure if the tach wasn't working before the slip - just didn't notice it. It was still stuck on 1.5 when we docked and turned it off. We drove approx 20 mph back to our dock with no problems, but we're worried about getting the boat back out and getting stranded. We didn't test the acceleration because we were afraid we would do more damage. No smoke, no hot smell and we checked gear lube and oil levels which were fine. What would cause the pause/slip? Could this be caused by the tachometer not working properly?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

If you have the Diacom diagnostic software you can generate a tacho signal and test the tacho that way....
Or you could disconnect the tacho and see what gives....
Then check the engine coupler....

Can you be more specific on this 'slip' Did the engine slow down, or stutter? or speed up without an increase in boat speed?
