Is there a way to ck for codes and set timing, etc without the Mercuriser scan tool? I know on my Volvo 280 GSI there is bu jumping some teriminals. Is this possible on my Mercruiser?
Thanks

Re: 2003 350MPI Magnum Diagnostics

Rats. I was hoping I could test the system with the $2.00 low voltage LED light and a jump wire like you informed me the other year on the Volvo. I take it from your answer you can't do this in the Mercruiser.

On the timing, I assumed it was adjustable and should be checked because it has a distributor. I did read the Seloc book and it doesn't address timing so maybe it's not adjustable??

Thanks,
Scott

That was the older MEFI systems. Merc used it too.
No, the timing is not adjustable on the new setups.

A few things here...

The timing is adjusted by the ECM, based on signals from the crank position sensor. And that thing that looks like a distributor, it's call a High Voltage Switch... and that's all it does, just points the spark at the right hole.

But the thing that scared me the most when I read your post.... 'seloc'

Please, please get rid of that thing... burn it, toss it in the trash, use it as a knee pad, or hand wipes, but it is not, and never will be, a manual to help fix your engine....

Try these...
Engine -> https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&...NDg3Ny00YWM2LThkYjgtM2UyMzc3NDEwZDFh&hl=en_GB
Drive (if it's not an inboard:D) -> https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&...YWRiNy00ODUyLWFmNzgtMTBmMzhlNGY4Mzk3&hl=en_US
ECM diags -> https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B1TAvwZ3TjhfY09pYVBxZFE1WVE
