Alternator 3.0L question

I have a 1987 3.0L I have trouble shoot my voltage problem and overall problem as a faulty voltage regulator, and alternator. The question I have is I currently have to seperate units. The voltage regualtor is monuted on the rear of the alternator. Both parts need to be replaced. The question is are the new alternators internally regulated now a days, or do I need to by both parts seperate? I have no issue doing so, but I don't want to buy un-needed parts. Thanks for the help.
