Can I swapt the 1985 drive in place of the 1981?

Or do I have to remove the transom assembly as well?

Ayuh,.... They're All 'bout swappin' a '81 305 merc with an '85 305 merc ain't it,..??

'n to cover All yer questions with just 1 answer,....

You've got Both drivelines complete, by the sounds, so everything will swap with everything else, by mixin', 'n matchin' from the pile of parts that is Both drivelines...

Will that require taking off the transom assembly as well? Haven't done a swapt before.

Ayuh,... I would, but you can run the MC-1,... It just changes the mix, 'n match recipe abit,...

Personally,... I'd use the '85 transom,... It's 'bout 1 of the Best, with the most greaseable points on it....

Much after '86/ '87, the grease fittin's were disappearin' at an alarmin' rate,...
Nowadays ya can't hardly grease Nothin'...
