Did my 3 wire alternator Conversion on my 3.7

I finished my Alternator conversion and everything seems to be running good, I took the boat out last week for a quick test run and the boat ran fine. I have a few questions though. How hot should the alternator get? I noticed it was running hot, my belt isn't smoking or making noise, nor it vibrates, just wondering. and my second question is not related to the alternator but I let the boat sit for 3 days and when I went to turn it on it took a few minutes for it to start, I also noticed that the rpm's at idle are a bit high, since I haven't replaced the Points I stop by the store today and Plan to replace them tomorrow, along with the rotor and cap. I will also check the timing. it just seemed odd that once it started it ran fine and I could turn it off and on no problem. It was just that initial start that gave me issues. Thanks for any input.
