1973 Mercruiser 1 - 165 gimbal ring removal

Currently removing the gimbal ring to get to the limit switch. I've got the lower shaft removed, as well as the bell housing and belows. The upper shaft is giving me a problem. It is splined, and has an allan plug that i removed from bottom, and removed the allan bolt that goes through the side of the upper gimbal ring and through the upper shaft. Where do i go from here? Do i have to remove the steering arm from the gimbal ring somehow to get the shaft to fall out?

Ayuh,... The tiller arm is bolted to the other end of the shaft...

I don't have a new limit switch. I can see that the wires are corroded up to the limit switch and i'd like to get to it first to determine what to do.

most folks just use the trailer function or bypass the limit switch and use only one button for up/out. ya just use judgment so as to not go to high when trimming. fwiw. my trim limit switch is dead too. i use two buttons and judgment.

Supposedly you remove the pipe plug in the upper swivel pin and a couple of side pins, use the 5/8" slide hammer attached to the appropriate size bolt remover adapter and pull the upper swivel pin which is splined down.
