Engine: Volvo Penta 5.0 GXiB Serial #4012069514

After running engine on muffs during the winterization process, I noticed water dripping from a small hole immediately behind the impeller housing that is mounted on the front of the engine. The small hole is NOT in the housing itself, but in a mounting flange on the pulley to which the housing is fastened. This may be normal, but I've never noticed it before if it is. I haven't found any mention of this in the OEM manual for the engine. Any idea if this is something that needs attention?

A picture would help. I am guessing it is probably a leaking seal in the pump.

Might be the weep hole for the pump, it possibly means the pump is on it's last leg. Take off the housing and inspect, you will know then what you need to replace. Probably should not run it next spring without looking at it.

Yep! It is a weep hole to tell you the pump is near failing.
The last Volvo i worked on had the same drip.
No rebuild kit for the one i had.The pump was not cheap either!

weep hole, means seal is leaking. They sell the seal separately but most times the bearing is toast and pump needs replaced.

Thanks for the replies. Saying "the pump" needs replacing, I am correct in assuming it is the water circulating pump that needs replacing and not the impeller?

Sorry that I don't have any pictures, but the hole is not in position conducive to photography. I had to use a light and mirror to find the source of the drip.

Ayuh,... If it's the Circulating waterpump that's Leaking,... Replace that 1...
If it's the Raw water pump that's leaking,... replace That 1....

The Circulating water pump is Above the crankshaft,...
The Raw water pump is Ahead of the crankshaft...

An update: It appears that this is an issue with the raw water pump and not the water circulating pump.

Had the same issue with mine - replaced seal, impeller, o-ring etc. and it's been fine so far after about 25+ hours of use. The key is that you catch it before the bearing goes out. If it wiggles it's toast fo sho - good luck
