Help...

I am ordering a 2004 Four Winns 194 Funship and need to know if I will need the Duo prop set up as not to have any problems pulling heavy folks out of the H20 on skis... The dealer is not clear on the benefits or not of the Duo vs the Single SX. The engine is the Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI 270HP the boat is 21.3 LOA and 3600lbs dry... Any info or guidance would be appreciated because I can change my (options) up until next week.

Thanks in advance for your help...

Dp gives you lower planing speed, alittle quicker out of the hole and in reverse the boat will track straighter.
On the downside props cost more(2 instead of one)and if you hit anything and the lower has to be repaired it will cost you more(one more gear and it's part of the outer propshaft)

Meadview, Richard is right on. I've had both, SX and DP outdrives and I'll stick with the DP. As far as costs if you hit something with the outdrive....that is what insurance is for.

Is that boat available with a 5.7? torque(and prop pitch) is what gives you a great hole shot, And that boat is pretty heavy. just my .02. That sounds like a great boat. I'd go with the duoprop.

Re: DUO PROP vs. SINGLE SX ON A V-PENTA 5.0 GXI (270HP)

I have that same boat with a 5.0 SX 220. The 220 is the smallest engine I would put in that boat. It is fine for slalom skiing with a light load of 3 or so people in the boat. It does get a little sluggish out of the hole with 4 adults and 3 small children in it, but is still fine for wakeboarding and 2 ski skiers. I have included a fast facts about the 194 that I got from Four Winns, it may help your decision. One thing I have found is that the 5.0 (carbed or FI), pulls harder out of the hole if it is propped to let it get a bit over 3000 rpm during acceleration. Propping to load the motor too much out of the hole hurts acceleration. The fast facts shows the SX models pulling a 21in. prop. My boat was delivered with a 19 and I run a Volvo 19 SS. With just me in the boat, but full fuel and water, I get right at 48-49 mph at 4800rpm, so I think I am propped right. You will also notice from the charts that the main difference between the SX and the DP is that the DP appears to be planed off at 2500rm, while the SX does not. In reality, the SX 220 in my boat will plane at 2600rpm. Overall, I am pleased with the package. Anyway, here is the fast facts I have for it. bvh -

Interesting response. Where did you get all that data? Don't see any performance difference worth the extra price of the dp. Sx drive is very comparable.

Why don't the offshore race boats use a dp ?

erie_guy

Re: DUO PROP vs. SINGLE SX ON A V-PENTA 5.0 GXI (270HP)

bvh,

Thank you for the data...
According to your information below with the 270hp-GXI-SX, I should be OK with the standard set up, and should only look at upgrading to an SS prop to allow a little more RMP out of the hole. My dealer states the info is hard to get because of the boat being introduced in "04"... Any chance you could contact me about the boat? You are the only person I have run into that has the "04" in thier possesion. 619-548-3135

I am currently waiting 4-6 weeks for my boat to come in.

Thanks Again / Meadview

Re: DUO PROP vs. SINGLE SX ON A V-PENTA 5.0 GXI (270HP)

I got the data after contacting Four Winns when I ordered my boat. For non 2004 boats, the data is on their website for 2003 back to the 70's for all models and power packages. It is under models and then previous models I think. Intersting stuff.

Both of the 194's I have seen had the 220 SX packages in them. They also both had 19 props. If you get the 270 SX, it may come with a 21 and be able to pull it well, since I hit max recommended WOT with a 19 and the 220. See what comes on it, FW is pretty good about matching the best pitch prop to their boats.

Re: DUO PROP vs. SINGLE SX ON A V-PENTA 5.0 GXI (270HP)

Erie----you give up speed with the duo prop---can't trim them out too far---the back prop comes out of the water.

Offshore racers take a half-mile or more to get on plane---longer to get up to speed. If they used all their horsepower at once they would sit there and blow both gearcases before moving 100 yards.

I don't think the duo-props make much difference, unless you want to pull skiers with a 25-foot- plus boat without drowning them.
