how to set the points on 470

i have a mercruiser 470/170hp how do you set points for it.

remove distributor cap and rotor, turn the crank while watching the points lobe on the distributor shaft, when the points are fully open(lobe at it highest point) use a feeler gauge and set points at .018 of an inch..good luck

Both suggestions above will work well...but make sure ignition switch is in off position when setting points with feeler guage. I use both methods...guage to get them close enough to start the engine, dwell meter to get them perfect. Make sure points are not advancing when doing final adjustment. Best of luck!!
