Re: alternator belt problems

Bet your pulleys are all rusty and they keep eating the belts up.

Checked the pulleys but there is no rust and didn"t find any rough edges. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Bob

.......... The alternator belt keeps breaking. Any suggestions? ...........

....in addition to Don S.'s suggestion:

Check the alignment of the alternator pulley to the pulley driving the alternator (a previous poster has suggested stretching a string ACROSS the pullies faces and verify that the string touches BOTH sides of EACH pulley).

Check the belt for proper length. A too long belt will 'slap' at given speeds and soon fatigue.

Check the belt for proper tension. About an 1/2" deflection on the long leg is about right.

Check that the belt width matches each pulley.

Ensure that the alternator is firmly mounted fore and aft.

I'm sure others will be along with more checks.

:)

Rusty pullys or maybe you just over tighten them when you adjust them.

Will the alternator spin freely, or is it tight??
