1968 mercruiser timing

I have a 1968 160 mercruiser and would like some help timing it with the timing gun do I need to do any thing besides just running it till its warmed up.
Aslo the timing index on the engine has an A and O on it with lines down the side could someone tell me what they mean and where should my mark be on that index.

3 notches to the 'A' side of 'O' or 6* BTDC....
You need manual #1, look in the 'adults only' section on the top of this page......

I was able to go to the adults only page and click on the mercruiser manual link and view the service manual but today when I click on the link it brings me to the mercury website where it ask for serial number and it looks like you need to purchase it , what do I need to do.
