Racor fuel filters

I have a 1997 Silverton with twin 454 fuel injected engines. I purchased two racor water seperators / fuel filters with the steel bowl. When I went to install them I noticed that the inputs are 1/4 npft ports the existing fuel lines are huge 1/2" ID. to the fuel pump. after the fuel pump there is a small filter on the engine that is 1/4 lines. But on the racor directions it says the seperator must be placed before the fuel pump. I also noticed on this boat there are return lines as well. So my question is can I reduce the 1/2 lines to 1/4" with brass fittings or will this screw things up? Or can I install it after the fuel pump where the lines are 1/4" even though racor says not to?

Re: Racor fuel filters

Howdy,

Yes, you can use fittings to make it fit.

I would NOT put the filter after the pump.

You want suction thru the filter instead of pressure on it.... It might work but it makes the fuel system more susceptible to leaks.
